Semantik Toponimi Penamaan Desa Alue Pineung, Kecamatan Langsa Timur, Provinsi Aceh

Abstract

Regional naming is part of semantic studies that can reveal the relationship between language, culture, history, and the social environment. A place name is usually not given haphazardly, but rather related to the geographical conditions and social experiences of the local community. This study aims to describe the semantic meaning of the name of Alue Pineung Village in Langsa City and explain the factors behind the village's naming. The study used a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation. Primary data were obtained through interviews with village officials who are familiar with the history of regional naming, while secondary data were obtained from various relevant library sources. The results show that the name Alue Pineung comes from two Acehnese lexemes: alue, meaning groove, and pineung, meaning areca nut tree. The name is based on the village's environmental conditions in the past, which had many water channels and areca nut trees. In addition to containing referential meanings related to natural conditions, the name Alue Pineung also reflects the cultural values ​​and identity of the Acehnese people who still maintain the use of regional languages ​​in naming areas. Geographical, social, and cultural factors are the main elements behind the naming of this village. This research contributes as scientific documentation regarding local toponymy and supports efforts to preserve the Acehnese language and culture.
