Abstract

West Tanjung Jabung Regency possesses distinctive natural resources, particularly coastal and peatland ecosystems, which have potential as sources of inspiration for batik motif creation. However, the use of these natural resources in batik motif development, particularly the visual transformation of source elements into motif forms, has received limited systematic scholarly attention. This study aims to explore natural sources of inspiration in West Tanjung Jabung Regency and analyze their visual transformation into batik motifs. The study employed a practice-based research approach by adapting S.P. Gustami's three-stage method of artistic creation, consisting of exploration, design, and realization. Data were collected through observation, documentation, interviews, and artistic exploration of selected natural objects as sources of inspiration. The analysis focused on the visual characteristics of the objects and their transformation through stylization, form simplification, compositional development, and motif arrangement. The findings indicate that Liberica coffee, mangroves, jeruju, mantis shrimp, and coastal shells possess distinctive morphological and visual characteristics that can be developed into batik motifs. The visual transformation process preserves the essential characteristics of the source objects while simplifying and developing their forms into ornamental compositions characterized by order, rhythm, balance, and harmony. This process resulted in a visual formulation of batik motifs that represents the ecological characteristics of West Tanjung Jabung Regency while strengthening the visual identity of batik based on local potential.
