Abstract

Family Development Session (FDS) in Indonesia's Program Keluarga Harapan (PKH) is intended to strengthen family resilience, yet its facilitation tends to be linear and overlooks the multilayered social systems around poor families. This study aimed to refine a socio-ecological approach–based social assistance module designed to strengthen the resilience of low-income families, involving prospective users as co-researchers. A one-cycle participatory action research design was used, consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Six participants joined a focus group discussion in Semarang Regency: three youth organisation (Karang Taruna) members, two PKH social workers, and one community leader. Data were collected through a feedback sheet containing three rating items, preferred features, open-ended suggestions, and willingness to try the revised product. Closed items were analysed descriptively, while open responses were analysed thematically through two cycles of coding. All participants rated the prototype as easy to use and useful, and all were willing to try the revised version, while clarity of language received the lowest score. Seventeen units of meaning produced four themes: readability and language register, platform accessibility, multimodal learning and appeal, and socio-cultural contextualisation. All participants asked for simpler language, the youth members requested a mobile application that works offline, and the social workers and community leader requested videos and local visuals. The reflection stage closed the cycle with five revision decisions. Socio-ecological modules for adult learners must translate academic concepts into everyday language and local media, and participatory refinement reveals needs that rating scales miss.
