Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain the process of second language acquisition in children from families with different ethnic backgrounds, namely a Toba Batak father and a Javanese mother. This study conducted a case study on an eight-year-old child named Zevano Sihombing. Data were collected through documentation and semi-structured interviews with the mother as the main informant, as well as observation and interviews. Data analysis was conducted using an interactive analysis model involving drawing conclusions, presenting, and reducing data. According to the results of the study, Toba Batak language became the first language because it was used predominantly in the family and community. Indonesian, on the other hand, was learned as a second language through interaction with the mother and education at school. Because Javanese was not widely used in daily life, its development was not optimal. Family, social environment, education, and daily interactions all influence language acquisition. As this study shows, the frequency of language used by a child in his immediate environment greatly influences the dominance of the language the child masters. It is hoped that these findings will aid research on language acquisition and child bilingualism, as well as serve as a reference for parents and educators in helping children from multiethnic families learn languages.
