Abstract

School counseling requires a comprehensive understanding of students, yet the function of anamnesis risks being understood primarily as a process of administrative information gathering and problem identification. In the context of junior high school students, student openness poses a challenge, so the information obtained does not always reflect students' experiences, needs, and backgrounds in a thorough manner. This article aims to analyze pastoral counseling as a reorientation of the function of anamnesis in school counseling, particularly in the context of students at SMP Negeri 1 Pakisaji. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach through a literature review and field observation, utilizing research documents as data sources to understand the implementation of anamnesis, the types of information explored, the utilization of the data, and the obstacles encountered in the process. The results of the analysis indicate that anamnesis retains an important function as a basis for understanding students and determining the form of assistance, but it needs to be reoriented from mere data collection toward an accompaniment process that is relational, dialogical, contextual, and oriented toward students' needs. Pastoral counseling can serve as a perspective that enriches school counseling practice through presence, acceptance, active listening, dialogue, affirmation, and continuous accompaniment. Thus, students are understood not merely as owners of problems to be identified, but as individuals who possess experiences, needs, potential, and hopes for growth.
