Abstract

This study discusses the meaning of character education from the perspective of existentialist philosophy, which emphasizes individual freedom in forming their own moral values while still prioritizing responsibility for every choice made. Existentialism rejects a dogmatic approach to education and emphasizes the importance of reflection, authenticity, and real experience in the moral learning process. This approach allows students to internalize moral values more deeply through personal experience and critical reflection on the decisions they make. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach. Data were obtained from various academic sources, including existentialist philosophical thoughts such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Søren Kierkegaard, and Viktor Frankl, as well as relevant previous research. The results of the study show that existentialism-based character education provides space for students to understand moral meaning more deeply, so that they can become individuals who have high moral awareness, think critically, and are responsible for their every action.
