Abstract

The discourse on the Islamization of knowledge emerged as a response to the dominance of modern science grounded in a secular worldview. This study aims to compare the concept of Islamization of science according to Ismail Raji al-Faruqi and Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, two figures whose ideas gave rise to the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) and the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC). The study employs a qualitative approach using library research and comparative content analysis of relevant primary and secondary works. The findings show that both thinkers agree that knowledge is not value-free, that it originates from God, and that modern Western science rests on a secular philosophy that marginalizes revelation. They differ in four respects: (1) procedure, namely a two-stage approach of removing and inserting elements in al-Attas and a twelve-step methodology in al-Faruqi; (2) scope, namely contemporary Westernized knowledge for al-Attas, while al-Faruqi also includes the Islamic intellectual heritage (turats); (3) the status of Sufism and intuition as a source and method of knowledge; and (4) the locus of change, namely the individual for al-Attas and social-communal transformation for al-Faruqi. Thus, al-Attas emphasizes the subject of knowledge (the human being), whereas al-Faruqi emphasizes its object, namely the academic disciplines. This study contributes a mapping of Islamization models as a basis for curriculum and epistemology development in Islamic higher education.
