Abstract

Smoking is a public health problem that can adversely affect smokers and people around them. Education using posters is one health promotion strategy to improve community attitudes toward preventing the harmful effects of smoking. This study aimed to determine the effect of poster-based education on attitudes toward smoking prevention among people of productive age. The study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. A total of 38 people of productive age in the service area of Tuntungan Public Health Center, Pancur Batu District, Deli Serdang Regency, received education about the harmful effects of smoking and preventive measures using posters. Respondents' attitudes were measured before and after the educational intervention using a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using a Paired Samples t-test to identify differences in attitude scores before and after the intervention. The results showed that the mean attitude score increased from 24.3158 before education to 36.2105 afterward, representing an improvement of 11.8947 points. The Paired Samples t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between pre-intervention and post-intervention attitude scores (p < 0.001). Therefore, poster-based education significantly improved attitudes toward preventing the harmful effects of smoking among people of productive age in the Tuntungan Public Health Center service area. Posters may serve as an effective health promotion medium to support community efforts to prevent smoking-related harm and encourage more positive preventive attitudes among people of productive age.
