Abstract

This study aims to describe the representation of anti-humanistic values through stylistic features used by the antagonist in the play China Reborn, based on stylistic analysis and Maslow’s 1954 humanistic psychology. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach using content analysis. The data consist of the antagonist’s utterances containing stylistic features and representing anti-humanistic values. Data were collected through observation and note-taking, then analyzed using an interactive model involving data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal no anti-humanistic values related to physiological needs. However, four forms of anti-humanistic values related to psychological needs were identified: esteem, self-actualization, safety, and love and belongingness needs. These values are expressed through rhetorical questions, hyperbole, euphemisms, threats, and imperative sentences. The stylistic devices function not only as aesthetic elements but also as instruments of verbal violence used to humiliate, blame, control choices, restrict freedom, intimidate, and disregard emotional needs. The findings indicate that anti-humanistic values in Reborn are predominantly manifested through the suppression of psychological needs rather than biological needs. Thus, the antagonist’s language represents psychological domination and violence that hinder the fulfillment of human needs.
